Deeds off to hot start in Arizona

Doug Deeds joined the Arizona Fall League late, but it didn't take him long to make an impact.

Deeds was added to the Mesa Solar Sox roster on Oct. 23, and has started off by hitting .333. The 25-year-old outfielder collected hits in four of his first five games, including two homers and six RBIs. The highlight came on Tuesday, when he homered for the second straight game and finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs in a 21-4 rout of Grand Canyon.

The rest of the Minnesota Twins' prospects also had interesting weeks. Here's how they did in the AFL and the Venezuelan Winter League:

Mesa Solar Sox
LHP Errol Simonitsch: The 24-year-old southpaw made his fifth start on Nov. 3, and yielded two runs on three hits in four innings against Grand Canyon. The southpaw is 0-1 with a 4.70 ERA.

3B Matt Moses: The 21-year-old Moses went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs in the past week. He is hitting .288 with a homer, 13 RBIs and nine runs scored with Mesa.

3B David Winfree: Winfree came back with two strong games to break a 1-for-18 slide. He went 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs in a 10-6 triumph over Scottsdale, then followed with another 2-for-3 effort.

LHP Jay Sawatski: Sawatski had another bad outing on Tuesday against Grand Canyon, yielding two runs on five hits in two innings. He is 0-1 with a 13.94 ERA this season.

2B/SS Matt Tolbert: Tolbert recorded a pair of two-hit games in the past week, only to see his batting average drop to .329.

RHP Kevin Cameron: The 26-year-old Cameron has surrendered four runs in his last 2 1/3 frames, boosting his ERA to 6.30.

RHP Kevin Slowey: The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Slowey suffered his first loss in a Nov. 4 start, yielding one run on four hits in four innings in a 4-2 defeat to Scottsdale.

Venezuelan Winter League

OF Erold Andrus: The Venezuela native managed one hit in his first six at-bats, but broke out in the past week. He was 8-for-19 with a homer and five RBIs in five games. The recent stretch has the 22-year-old outfielder hitting .360.

OF Alex Romero: Romero was slightly off his torrid pace this week, finishing 5-for-16 with five RBIs in six games. The 23-year-old outfielder was unstoppable in his first three weeks in the VWL, hitting a robust .364. His recent "slump" has dropped his batting average to .352.

RHP Beau Kemp: Kemp won his first three decisions from Oct. 21-28, but suffered his first loss on Nov. 2 after giving up four runs in one inning. He came back with a pair of scoreless appearances and has posted a 4.11 ERA in 10 games in the VWL.

2B/3B Luis Maza: The 26-year-old second baseman went 8-for-20 during a five-game hitting streak to raise his average 31 points to .310. He also scored in each of the last five games to raise his total to 16 in 21 games with Tigres de Aragua.

RHP Yohan Pino: Pino made two relief appearances in the past week and allowed two runs in 2 2/3 innings. The right-hander is 2-0 with a 2.79 ERA.

OF Trent Oeltjen: The 23-year-old Oeltjen is 4-for-14 in five games since joining Aguilas del Zuliar on Oct. 28.
