Gardenhire, Carroll tossed after arguing play
MINNEAPOLIS -- Ron Gardenhire and Jamey Carroll were ejected during the eighth inning of Friday's 10-6 loss to Detroit after disputing a close call at first base.

Carroll poked a grounder toward the right side of the infield that pulled Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder away from the bag. Fielder scooped the ball and tossed it to pitcher Joaquin Benoit, who covered first. Carroll and Benoit appeared to touch the bag simultaneously, but first-base umpire Alan Porter ruled Carroll out to end the inning.

The Twins third baseman immediately vented his frustration with the call, earning a quick ejection from Porter. Gardenhire then rushed out of the dugout and voiced his disapproval, also drawing an ejection.

The ejection was the first of the 38-year-old Carroll's career. Carroll explained, "Tie goes to the runner," and said he was surprised by the ejection more than anything else.

"I've said a lot worse before," he said. "I didn't cuss or anything."

Though Gardenhire said he was convinced Carroll was safe after seeing the replay, he took bigger issue with Carroll's ejection.

"I was just mad because Carroll got thrown out of the game," the 11th-year Twins manager said. "He doesn't say enough to get thrown out of a baseball game. And he didn't say enough tonight. That was my point."

Gardenhire made sure his case was heard before leaving. He went nose-to-nose with Porter prior to finally exiting, tossing his hat behind him.

"He didn't deserve to get thrown out of the ballgame," Gardenhire said. "I did. I earned mine. So I'll take it."

The ejection was the 61st of Gardenhire's career and his second of the season. He was ejected from a game on April 17 against the Yankees for arguing balls and strikes.
