Twins acquire right-handed pitcher Duke Welker to complete trade with Pirates

The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Duke Welker from the Pittsburgh Pirates as the player to be named later in the Justin Morneau trade. Morneau was traded to the Pirates August 31 for outfielder Alex Presley and a player to be named later or cash.

Welker, 27, went 3-4, with a 3.57 ERA (63.0 IP, 25 ER), nine saves, 31 walks and 65 strikeouts in 48 appearances for Triple-A Indianapolis. The 6-foot-7, 240-pounder also appeared in two games for the Pirates this season, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings. He has a career minor league record of 16-39, with a 4.19 ERA (474.1 IP, 221 ER) with 254 walks and 377 strikeouts in 235 games (46 starts). He was originally drafted by the Pirates in the second round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft out of Seminole State College (Fla.).
