LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- It may not serve as a springboard into a career in baseball, but one lucky Twins fan is going to experience the mother of all internships next summer at Target Field.
The Twins have donated an eye-popping, once-in-a-lifetime item to the Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) Auction, currently taking place on MLB.com. Titled "Intern for the 2014 All-Star Game," the winner of this package will receive a one-day internship in the Twins Baseball Communications department, assisting team personnel on July 14 during the MLB Home Run Derby at Target Field.
After two days of bidding, the event has generated $1,011, spanning 10 bids. It shouldn't come as a surprise that this was one of the more sought-after items on the list of more than 80 donations from all 30 teams. The winner of the internship will have the opportunity to be on field during batting practice, deliver media information to the press box and clubhouse, be present during event news conferences and assist Twins staff with other tasks throughout the day. He or she will also receive an official event credential and a tour of the home clubhouse.
Not a bad way to spend a summer day in the middle of baseball season, eh?
The Twins are also offering a private clubhouse and dugout tour with All-Star pitcher Glen Perkins, with a minimum bid of $500. The winning bidder and three guests will receive a tour of the Twins home clubhouse, dugout and training facility at Target Field, access to on-field batting practice, four tickets to the select game and autographed items from Perkins.
The MLB.com Auction to benefit Stand Up To Cancer is part of a much larger initiative that MLB has supported since 2008 as founding sponsor. Public relations representatives from all 30 clubs were inspired to act based on individual club members impacted by the disease, and they jointly organized the auction.
Bidding closes at 9 p.m. CT on Thursday for 80 baseball-related experiences ranging from private pitching and batting lessons with players to lunches with general managers to team bus rides and meet-and-greets with Hall of Fame players.
Last year, the auction raised more than $150,000. Major League Baseball and its 30 clubs are the founding partners of Stand Up To Cancer and a lead donor since 2008, committing more than $40 million. As the initiative's founding donor, MLB has collaborated with Stand Up To Cancer on significant awareness-building efforts, including public service announcements, in-stadium promotion and fundraising events, and a World Series game has been dedicated to the initiative for each of the past three years.
Every team has donated at least one item or experience, with most teams offering up multiple donations.
