Cubs claim righty Hendriks off waivers from Twins

The Cubs claimed right-hander Liam Hendriks off waivers from the Twins on Friday. The 24-year-old is 2-13 with a 6.06 ERA in 30 Major League appearances (28 starts) with Minnesota over parts of the last three seasons.

Hendriks signed with the Twins as a non-drafted free agent in February 2007 and became the 28th Australian-born player and 20th pitcher to play in the big leagues when he made his debut with Minnesota in 2011.

He made the Twins' Opening Day roster for the first time in 2012, going 1-8 with a 5.59 ERA in 16 starts that year.

The righty split the 2013 season between the Twins and Triple-A Rochester, going 1-3 with a 6.85 ERA in 10 big league games (eight starts). Over six Minor League seasons, he's 42-38 with a 2.99 ERA and 487 strikeouts in 100 games (98 starts).

The Cubs also signed outfielder Ryan Kalish and catcher John Baker to Minor League deals with invitations to Spring Training. Baker, 32, spent the last two seasons with the Padres, appearing in 79 games over that span. Kalish, 25, last appeared in the big leagues with the Red Sox in 2012, when he played in 36 games and hit .229.
