MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins manager Ron Gardenhire lost a replay challenge for the first time in the third inning of Wednesday night's game against the Dodgers at Target Field.
But after a review that lasted two minutes, it was determined that home-plate umpire Chris Segal's initial call was correct and the call was confirmed. Butera was able to beat the throw from Jason Kubel with a nice slide to avoid the tag from catcher Kurt Suzuki.
"I thought it was really close from my view, so I got the thumbs-up to challenge it," Gardenhire said. "The first views that they showed looked like it was out, but after we challenged it, they showed some other angles, which made a difference. But I can't wait out there for 45 minutes waiting for other angles. So we challenged it and it was a chance to take a run off the board. I'll take my chances there."
The run tied the game at 1, and Adrian Gonzalez followed with an RBI single to give the Dodgers an early 2-1 lead.
It was the first challenge issued by Gardenhire since April 2, when he successfully had a call overturned on a missed catch by White Sox outfielder Adam Eaton.
