Gardenhire went out to challenge the play, but after a review, it was ruled the call on the field would stand and Dozier was ruled out. Hicks, though, later scored on a two-out RBI single from Trevor Plouffe to give the Twins an early 1-0 lead.
Gardenhire has now challenged 13 plays and has had five calls overturned this year.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi also lost a challenge in the eighth inning on another close play at first base that involved Brett Gardner. Gardner hit a slow roller to first baseman Joe Mauer, who flipped the ball to right-hander Phil Hughes as Gardner slid headfirst into the bag. Gardner was called out to end the inning.
But Girardi challenged the play, and after a review that lasted more than two minutes, the ruling was that the call on the field would stand.
