MINNEAPOLIS -- After going 3-for-5 with a homer and a walk as the Twins' leadoff hitter in Tuesday's 10-2 win, shortstop Eduardo Nunez remained atop the lineup for a second straight game on Wednesday against the Royals.

Tuesday was the first time this season that Nunez has led off, and it's something he's only done seven times in his career. But Twins manager Ron Gardenhire liked the spark he brought to the top of the order, so he's going to leave him up there for now.

"He got a lot of hits, so it's easy to put him back up there," Gardenhire said. "I don't know if he's a prototype or even how many times he's done that in his career. But he's an aggressive hitter and has a good plan at the plate, and he can run a little bit."

Nunez has hit well in limited action this year -- .321/.354/.487 with three homers and 14 RBIs in 27 games entering Wednesday. He's also coming off a strained right hamstring that forced him to go on the 15-day disabled list in mid-June before returning on Monday.

"He's come out of the chute pretty good," Gardenhire said. "We've been looking for offense, so I put him up there."
